National Healthcare Corporation (NHC)

Client: National Healthcare Corporation (NHC)
Service Category: Strategic Planning

National Healthcare Corporation contacted Leadership Logistics, LCC regarding their growing concern over the insufficient number of geriatric nurses available for work in the southern part of Middle Tennessee. As a development of comprehensive continuum of care, NHC’s goal is to meet the healthcare needs of seniors through services provided by gerontological nurses. Availability of geriatric nurses is essential to the continued success of NHC, which operates in communities across 10 states. LL was asked to intervene and to halt their client’s growing concern by performing market research and constructing a strategic plan for how to address NHC’s concerns and rectify the issue going forward.

Leadership Logistics constructed a survey and collected data that was then integral in the orchestration of LL’s game plan aiming to create “home grown” nursing solutions in Middle Tennessee. The plan also detailed how to work toward fostering sustainability within the region for the employment demands of nurses. But how?

First, LL surveyed nurses employed at NHC facilities to solicit answers to two questions: what is the most satisfying aspect of your geriatric nursing career, and what is the most challenging aspect of your geriatric nursing career, other than staffing droughts? Then, LL surveyed nursing students within six higher education institutions in Middle Tennessee to solicit answers to two questions: what are the three nursing specialties you prioritize the most, and why is your first choice your number one preference?

The findings from the surveys were revealing, thought-provoking, and certainly philosophy changing.

LL laid out a game plan for NHC: beginning with 10 high schools in the southern part of Middle Tennessee, NHC will host and present an assembly program in each school to promote the careers of all nurses and hospital administration, in effort to drive as many students as possible toward the ever-growing opportunities of nursing careers. In addition, NHC will work closely with the surveyed higher education institutions in the area to provide specific experience and awareness of gerontological nursing careers through opportunity and video.

Ultimately, LL provided guidance for how to “home grow” solutions to nursing needs through strategically teaching southern Middle Tennessee to become self-sufficient and satisfy employment demands of nurses.
